Hatter just shared this on facebook: http://news.yahoo.com/senate-bill-rewrite-lets-feds-read-your-e-mail-without-warrants-191930756.html
Re: Remeber SOPA and PIPA?
I read the articles and spoke in support of shutting such legistlation down. As expected the onslaught on our freedoms continues.

The last I read at The Oil Drum was Leahy withdrew the legislation as he was the source and the language included GOP members changes.

they will keep on trying to push something similar through. As soon as they get one thing done, more will come. Always be vigilant.

They won't even need legistlation like this to control the net; they already are. Edward Snowden's not the story. The fate of the internet is

Re: Remeber SOPA and PIPA?
Good timing, I found 2 more very informative articles indicating the times we are in.
My family's Google searching got us a visit from counterterrorism police
News World news The NSA files Series: Glenn Greenwald on security and liberty Previous | Index XKeyscore: NSA tool collects 'nearly everything a user does on the internet'

This really shows how out of control this has become; even government is locked out of knowing what is going on. Not even Congress knows how the NSA works

lmfao congress barely knows how the internet works. The average teenager probably knows more.

Re: Remeber SOPA and PIPA?
There may be some consequences bubbling up regarding these laws and the environment they are written in >>
Here's a Glen Greenwald piece about Email service used by Snowden shuts itself down, warns against using US-based companies.
Pay attention to the details and be sure to check out the embedded link of Bruce Schneier's who explains what's been created in the information age as a government-private mutually beneficial system of snooping.
The consequences include some foreign countries putting US companies at arm's length and some domestic companies unwilling to do business in the US.
The Lavabit details are pretty profound.

OK, I expect a huge backlash on all levels, lots of innocents to get hurt in the process as the power grabs continue to escalate....so reminiscent of the McCarthy era it's frightening. It's even worse now because of the tools they have and the patriot acts being abused.
I also found a treasure trove of information on the ACLU's website. We may all want to consider joining them....

Yup, I also expect a backlash. I just don't have a vision of the details. Which is why I noted the Lavabit story.melodiccolor wrote:OK, I expect a huge backlash on all levels, lots of innocents to get hurt in the process as the power grabs continue to escalate....so reminiscent of the McCarthy era it's frightening. EXCLUSIVE: Owner of Snowden’s Email Service on Why He Closed Lavabit Rather Than Comply With Gov’t (Link)
This shows the extent of how severely Lavabit's owner's rights have been abridged. He can't even tell his lawyer much of it.

Yes, let us pay attention to this.Snowden went on to say, quote, "When Congress returns to session in September, let us take note of whether the internet industry’s statements and lobbyists—which were invisible in the lead-up to the Conyers-Amash vote—emerge on the side of the Free Internet or the NSA and its Intelligence Committees in Congress."

2 new updates in developing stories:
Feds Threaten To Arrest Lavabit Founder For Shutting Down His Service (link)
Court: Ability to police U.S. spying program limited (link)
Oh yeah there is going to be backlash as it becomes clearer how out of control this all is.

Here's an interview (at the end of the clip) with Vic Hyder of Silent Circle, check it out and listen in-between the lines.

Google and the NSA: Who’s holding the ‘shit-bag’ now? by Julian Assange :
Read the rest.It has been revealed today, thanks to Edward Snowden, that Google and other US tech companies received millions of dollars from the NSA for their compliance with the PRISM mass surveillance system.
So just how close is Google to the US securitocracy? Back in 2011 I had a meeting with Eric Schmidt, the then Chairman of Google, who came out to see me with three other people while I was under house arrest. You might suppose that coming to see me was gesture that he and the other big boys at Google were secretly on our side: that they support what we at WikiLeaks are struggling for: justice, government transparency, and privacy for individuals. But that would be a false supposition. Their agenda was much more complex, and as we found out, was inextricable from that of the US State Department. The full transcript of our meeting is available online through the WikiLeaks website.

Why am I not too surprised? The companies who are not being harrassed in today's suppressive climate are probably the ones in partnership in the subversion of the US Constitution for power and profits, protection and immunity.

Yes, it is fantastically underwhelming from the aspect of 'to get along, one has to go along', to put it in the vernacular.melodiccolor wrote:Why am I not too surprised? What really stands out to me, is the strength of influence of the corporate-state' as a single entity.

Re: Remeber SOPA and PIPA?
It does rather uncover backroom stuff that is usually more hidden, but this close relationship has been standard pretty much since the 1890s.
In other news, momemtum is building for those fighting back to have a chance. In ACLU lawsuit, scientist demolishes NSA’s “It’s just metadata” excuse(link). Of note here is the courts are refusing to dismiss such lawsuits now or try them in secret court now that so much has been leaked and is in the open. It's finally the beginnings of the tide turning.

Re: Remeber SOPA and PIPA?
Yeah I was pretty sure that excuse was always a play on words.
You don't always need the exact content of a message to reconstruct what somebody is doing online because anything you do is trackable and whoever is ultimately hosting the website or online system someone is using has that data as their property.
It's a loophole that came with basically how the internet works.

The story goes on.
Crypto prof asked to remove NSA-related blog post (link)
The article that got him into trouble: A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering (link) The main point here is if the NSA is weakening security for all sources. Bad guys can break into just about anything easier and publish the way in for others so everything from banking to medical to business is far less secure than it should be due to the NSA.
This makes this article a bit of smoke and mirrors then: Google encrypts data amid backlash against NSA spying (link) .

I'll keep an eye out for further events at Mat Green's. I hadn't thought about the RSA backdoor's making it easier for crooks, but it is totally logical given the tech.
