Kitties and Poisonous plant info

I just received this email warning from a Bengal Cat Rescue forum I belong to. There are a lot of us here that have cats so I thought I would pass this information on to everyone.

Recently the home improvement stores have stocked their shelves with a
plant called the "Sago Palm".
This is a decorative houseplant that you may be tempted to purchase.
If your pets ingest ANY part of this plant it will cause liver
failure. Even with agressive veterinary treatment 70% of these pets
will die.
We implore you to keep your household free of this plant. We are
devastated when we are unable to help your pets.

I am sure you all know that there are a lot of other house plants also that are toxic to cats (dogs too). So please be extra careful when buying houseplants that you may want to reside inside with your pets.

There are other houseplants that are poisonous to cats, too. For instance, poinsettias come to mind. Some cats won't mess with indoor plants, but others will chew on any plant. I had one who would do that and needed to be very careful with plants. It also seems to me that jade plants can be poisonous.

Thanks for the information. The government poison center has more information on just which plants are toxic to which pets, so people can be careful not to accidentally harm them.

I've read that poinsettas are actually only mildly irritating to cats and that older info is erronious. This is from reputable sources. But there are many more that are extremely dangerous, like lily bulbs, and tulips. Lemon, onions and chocolate are dangerous to cats and dogs and raisins and grapes can be fatal to dogs. So can that new artificial sweetener that is in so many foods now. (The name is alluding me.)
