Loretta Lux
Loretta Lux is a German photographer who used to be a painter. I find her images fascinating in a strange sort of way. Nobody knows exactly how she creates her works, but they are reminisent of child paintings from the 19th century. Kind of cool actually.

I agree, they are fascinating in a strange sort of disturbing way. Definately not your run of the mill photographer.

Re: Loretta Lux
Kinda strange is right. The posers seem to be devoid of emotion and almost life.

Re: Loretta Lux
These are eerily weird. Devoid of emotion, zombieish, like the walking dead, possessed. Creepy. (shudder)

Devoid of emotion, really? Reamsie, do you agree? I don't see it that way...

I don't see any emotion in the pics either.

I don't think their devoid of emotion, I see a kind of sadness. I want to use the word waif when I look at these.

Wistful is the word that sprang to mind when I saw these photos. I find them hauntingly beautiful. Innocence lost.

I think they are wonderful! They remind me of the china dolls of the 19th century. I don't get a negative feeling from them at all. They look like tin-types with vibrant color. IIRC, didn't most of the very early photographs show subjects in very rigid poses, hardly ever smiling?
Why was that, BTW?
Very interesting.

'Why was that' - needed extra long time for exposure, he he...
Well, those really are interesting... I keep thinking of them as alie3ns or... yup, kinda zombies/Damien3 or something, to rise up & attack you...
a kind of melancholy/sadness comes to mind too...
Interesting to look at, but I wouldn't really want them on my wall or so...

Because people had to sit still for up to 15 minutes sometimes when having their pictures taken. In fact some early photographers used metal clamps to hold a person's neck still. You can't hold a still smile for 15 minutes. In fact that is why a lot of early photographs are with closed eyes as well.
