Great article discussing the actual themes behind popular literary masterpieces that have been completely misinterpreted...I knew about a couple of them, but there are some surprises here.
This link is for page two, my favourite surprises...but there is a previous button at the bottom of the page to see the other three.

I've read Alice in Wonderland, it's a small book. If you actually take the time to read it there really isn't any drug references that are explicit. There are things that can be taken as references, but only if you apply it by looking for it. In the story, there are two parts in which she ingests something that causes her to change shape, and a third in which she changes shape by herself. Replace the mushroom with anything and it still sounds like drugs to a drug culture. The last pages talks of youthful dreams and reality.
Most people get literature wrong because they don't read them and rely on the biased opinions of others.

People do it all the time to novels. They put their stereotypes into the novel or make their own interpretation of it. It only becomes iffy when the point is skewed. You know Dr. Jekyll is actually the large man and Mr. Hyde is the small? It's actually the opposite of the Hollywood and typical image of them. The physical part of Mr. Hyde isn't the point of the story, nor is Frankenstein this gigantic clumsy monster.

*sarcasm alert* Teachers and professors that get their facts wrong, color me shocked.* That's our educational system for you.
It isn't just literature, you have the same problems in any history class. Either an editing of facts (whitewash) or just outright not getting them correct.

There are no facts. Just our experiences and our interpretations and/or reactions to them.
