I guess it was inevitable
Our host, in an effort to make more money has added ads below the headers of all pages here, starting today. The flashing ones are particularly annoying but I don't know if there is anything we can do about it. Sign of the times I'm afraid.

The only ad I have seen so far is the spinning dancer scam...

Hmmm....I am seeing alot of different ads, none of which appeal to me....
It seems to be just randomly throwing ads my way.

Re: I guess it was inevitable
blocking adds can be a good thing.......but then sometimes you miss things that you might actually like to see.........by the way I just saw one in this moment that said........."FINISH THIS PUZZLE".....interesting. It seems puzzle pieces are in my awarness today...actually that made me connect to something else in my awarness today.......I woke up today with a song in my head Be bop a lula........shes my baby........who sings that song?
acutally now I am giggling.....this one cracked me up.............
Klik her for at inkassere..........with a big arrow pointing that a way.........hey this is fun........these adds are fun.. Do we have any translators here?

Gene Vincent...yes I knew that, no google required...LOL
I went somewhere and opted out of mass targeted advertising...no tracking cookies. I searched for an old Elvis song last month and suddenly had all these Elvis related ads...and I do not like Elvis...so something had to be done!

I'm looking for ways to remove or minimize the ads over at our host's support forum. Already saw a few suggestions to try.

Yes, it appears to have worked; ads are not gone but they are greatly reduced. Tell me what you see.

Re: I guess it was inevitable
Well, it looks like the best I could do is minimize the intrusiveness of the ads for guests and members and block them for admins with the new settings they're providing.
But I went to the support forum of our host and someone posted this site, which will block the ads and just leave a blank space where they were:
https://extranet.criteo.com/resources/docs/Process%20to%20block%20Criteo%20banner%20via%20Browser%20Options.pdf
As a bonus, it may also block ads on other boards as well.

Y'know, MC, due to Justin Passing's and Rivershine's mention of AdBlock, I've installed it on both the Safari and Chrome browsers on my Mac - but I've shut it off in Safari - it will be ready, if needed, if net neutrality is eliminated in the future, as both browsers will be left open for a surfing session.
Chrome will be used for the sites the cable and telecom companies place on the information "super-highways" so I will not see the ads placed on those sites. And Safari will be used for the sites the cable and telecom companies place on the information "dirt roads" so I will see the ads on those sites!
There are always ways to fight back when the corporate world continues to bribe the U.S. Congress and state legislatures!

Is NoScript just for one browser or can it be used with any browser?

I just installed it this morning, Justin, and I'm using an Intel-based Mac(Snow Leopard 10.6.5) - are you on Mac or Windows?Justin Passing wrote:waterdragon - i've heard that adblock for chrome is rather severely crippled. is it working well for you?
I've not had sufficient experience with it yet to encounter any strange behaviors, but worst case analysis, I'll install AdBlock on Firefox as well.

MC,
NoScript Firefox extension provides extra protection for Firefox, Seamonkey and other mozilla-based browsers: this free, open source add-on allows JavaScript, Java and Flash and other plugins to be executed only by trusted web sites of your choice (e.g. your online bank), and provides the most powerful Anti-XSS protection available in a browser.

Re: I guess it was inevitable
as long as you aren't getting off and flogging it...which seems to be the case with some of these ads...but at least they are small, and most of them aren't flashing at us- it could definitely be much worse.

Edie googled ad blockers and she found them for all browsers. I should check out what is available for mine.
