Cellars Empty Cellars

Years ago folks put fresh produce in the cellar to keep so they would have it in the off months throughout the winter. Not too many have cellars any more. I was wondering what would be the next best thing? A refrigerator came to mind right away but there have been times that vegetables and potatoes will go bad in the refrigerator for an extened period of time. I wondered if any of you had any ideas of how to keep produce fresh in the winter?
