Bin Laden
He's in the news threatening the US again. Do you think the US is in for more attacks in 2010? Are you afraid?

Re: Bin Laden
It is a given that sooner or later, he and his organisation will strike somewhere and if not him, another one in the world. I don't think that at anytime in history, there hasn't been such threats.
Bin Laden also periodically makes threats against the US. I doubt anything is more dangerous now than it was last month or last year. It is constant and I refuse to live my life in fear because of it.
So no, I am not afraid right now as I am too busy living my life.

Or even the last 50 years for that matter.

Your fearlessness is an admirable quality. I wish I shared it.

But it's true that if we live are lives in fear then he wins.
That idea sticks in my craw even if I do worry (can't help it, just the way I am). So I try my best not to.

Re: Bin Laden
As a US citizen, I am more concerned for my welfare regarding my own country's behavior (that's the country that developed Nuke's) than any Bin Laden behavior.
To the fear/BL issue, whats the worst that could happen ? Death ?
Which is, in reality is going home to the Source. I don't view that as something to fear.

I share many of these views, too. My thoughts tend towards if it wasn't Bin Laden, then it would probably someone else. What I have learned from my spiritual pursuit is that fear of what might happen is rather senseless. I try to stay in the moment as much as possible because that's all there really is anyway. Heck, a meteor could fall out of the sky and splat us. Driving to work each day is rather taking my life in my hands. There are all sorts of nasty things that could happen. But, hey, why should I spend my time worrying? If something happens and I am staying in the moment, I may be better prepared to cope with it, as opposed to being caught up in worrying. On the other hand, as RBM wrote, if I can go home to the Source/Creator/whatever one wishes to call that which is, that's fine with me, too. At some time, that is where I will go anyway.

Well, as others have pointed out, we will all die of something someday. We can choose to be afraid of everything or we can choose to enjoy the time we have been allotted. It helps that I am aware of statistical probabilities and prone to premonitions.
Statistically, we are all far more likely to be seriously injured in an auto accident or even struck by lightening than to be a victim of terrorism or hatred. I say this as a free thinking nonreligious outspoken woman of jewish descent; it seems half the world would like me dead. Kind of puts things in perspective.
If you want to live in less fear, then it is simple; stop reading the news daily. It sells by inciting anxiety and fear and focuses on stories which provoke it. I just keep a loose eye on larger trends so I have some idea of what is happening in the world and country, know if a storm is headed this way, look for topics of interest such as science and ignore much of the rest.

About being human and 'going home'

Re: Bin Laden
We are so fortunate to live in a country where we are not assaulted on a daily basis by these kinds of attacks. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to live in the Middle East where this is a familiar occurance. People that complain about the security to get on a plane in the US should try getting on and off of an airplane in Israel from what I hear.
I think the point has already been made, but I concur. You can't live your life in fear. You can't worry about everything that might happen to you and never leave the house. That's how people like him win.

I think I get what you mean, in spite of, not because of, the plane reference.
As practiced, plane security is a sham, and amounts to what security specialist Bruce Schneier calls 'security theater'.
If you wish to dig any deeper into security you can read into the related matter of intelligence. I don't find the reading uplifting. Maybe I would if I was working in a job that was created by the present security practices.
