Where the Wild Things Are Empty Where the Wild Things Are

Just went to see this movie based on the children's story book by Maurice Sendak. The creatures (and special effects) are pretty impressive and very wild too. Would probably scare young children!

One of the creatures is voiced by James Gandolfini (who played mafioso Tony Soprano for years in that cable TV series) so I had a hard time not seeing and hearing Tony in this character. The creature even looked and behaved like him to me! Anyway, it was fun and entertaining.

Here is a good video interview with the author of the story:

How old is your son?

I found it sad too. The boy as well as the wild creatures were unhappy about a lot of things in their lives. It did end on an upbeat note with the boy returning home from his journey to a hot meal and his mother's arms (signaling that she still loves him even if he is rambunctious and rebellious and difficult at times, just like the Wild Things are).

The interview with Sendak gives a lot of insight about the story and how it came to be. The book has enjoyed a phenomenal success since first published in 1963--it must have struck some strong chords with kids and parents.
