Secrets

This is fascinating. People send anonymous postcards to this site telling their secrets which then are published on the site:

http://postsecret.blogspot.com

The picture in the postcard tells a lot of the story.

Why would people do this except to hope to be found out and forgiven one day?

It serves as a confessional, to get something that you're not completely comfortable coming clean with off your chest. I've even pondered posting there myself a few times. I think that it can be healthy in the right situations.

But I think you're right MC, there's usually a small part of the person that kind of hopes they'll be discovered and forgiven.

That's a good question. Since it's done anonymously there is not great risk of being found out. People can be honest in this anonymous situation where they perhaps otherwise could not. "Confession is good for the soul" even if done anonymously.

I think all great stories work because of this principle.
