The importance of ego for an HSP
When I refer to ego here, I just mean self belief. Why do you need that? Well. HSP's see fine nuances of things. Things we can't explain. New ideas. Things that challenge the establishment. Things that provoke and unnerve others. Without ego, we would pay little value to these things. After all, how dare we challenge what is already known, and what people believe, with little evidence, especially if we suffer with self doubt.
I believe that believing in your ideas and their importance, even if you can't prove them - yet - is crucial for an HSP. Believing in your gut reactions, believing in what you pick up. If you don't, your HSP is just useless for you, it's just crippling, it holds you down, and it tells you things you feel is not welcome. And when you share it, people question you, and you just end up feeling you only hurt others. Sharing causes fear in others and in ourselves, because ideas, even if ideas may just been seen as ideas, are deeply connected to our emotions.
Ideas are buoyant and fluid in their nature, we easily associate onwards from them. Therefore, they easily bring up old memories, fear, hurt, things we rather keep buried. Keeping our emotions buried, therefore, is the same as keeping your ideas buried. If you fear ideas, change, and the new, it is only because you are holding back your emotions and what is important for your sensitive nature to pay attention to. We may also fear our idea will be wrong, and therefore end up hurting people unnecessarily. And yes, our first gut reaction may be wrong on a larger scale, but it brings focus on finding new truth and paying attention to what we feel. The more attention we pay to our emotions, our ideas, and our visions, the more clear and nuanced they get, and the more we notice they are important. What hurts, is remaining on surface, because that is also hiding from harmony and your natural free flow and innate creativity.

This is a huge insight. People, not just HSP often are afraid of new ideas, change on many levels. Fear ends up curtailing their world, for they seek tight control and security--anything new is suspect when it controls.
It takes courage to be free and hear it all and it's worth every bit of it and more.

yes the hidden gifts for being open to the depth of yourself...when you are able to connect at that deeper level in trust of who you know yourself to be, letting go of what others think of you at that level, you open fully to the gifts of yourself as one..

Meh, the premise is flawed.
Self belief is the cause of the fear. Get rid of self belief and you will have you core self, which operates just fine in this physical virtual reality.
To add some context to why the premise is flawed, following is an excerpt from a Q/A between Tom Campbell and a reader at his site. The exchange makes reference to a quote attributed to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin:
The other element of background, in the excerpt, that I'll point out, is to Sigmund Freud's actual position on the concept of the EGO * as opposed to his legacy position which has, in some cases suffered mistranslation and resulted in confusion.
Here's the excerpt:

The conventional wisdom has it the other way around.“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
The other element of background, in the excerpt, that I'll point out, is to Sigmund Freud's actual position on the concept of the EGO * as opposed to his legacy position which has, in some cases suffered mistranslation and resulted in confusion.
Here's the excerpt:
Note the absolutely extensive 'real estate' the EGO has. Now consider a modern culture, for example, and apply this as a metric to see to what extent that culture is all about EGO, versus the spirituality that sources the human animal."I am spirit having a human experience. How does this fit with the therory of the book?"
This statement fits perfectly with the theory of the book. Ego is perhaps used here a little differently than what you are used to. Ego is generated when the spirit/consciousness having the apparently physical human experience is ignorant of its true identity and purpose, and is of lower quality (has much to learn, understand and needs to evolve) -- it thus expresses fear, needs, wants, demands, expectations, desire, greed, in its attachment to, and manipulation of, the virtual physical reality. Ego is the sense of I manipulating the virtual physical reality to assuage its fear, and to secure and maintain its wants, needs, and desires -- it gives the physical more importance and exclusivity than it is due. Ego drives the action, when fear is the motivator. Ego and fear are the antithesis of compassion and love. Ego is the consciousness lost in a virtual physical reality manipulating the 10,000 things in a way to make itself feel better (less fearful). I hope this helps.
* My notation.

Why is self belief the source of fear?
