Aw...ya mean they didn't start with Grandma? She had sayings for everything!

I completely agree with you, Bluedream. My granny has sayings for every situation. The problem is that I do not know if you have the same sayings than we have in Germany.
There is one for example: "The last shirt has no pockets."
This simply means that you should not be tight-fisted in your life but also spend something. When you are dead you cannot take with you in your grave.

Yes...I think there are similarities of sayings in all cultures and times.
As in the 'the other side of the tossed coin' from your saying/quote...[Book of Changes, I Ching] 'the basket will be empty'. And...it will if the tax man and lousy economy has it's say!
I've personally experienced that...as we ALL have at one time or other! [lol!]
