I was absolutely astounded when I read this. If you don't know what a kindle is here is a link: Kindle

Now here is the article. The irony that they chose George Orwell's 1984 is not lost on people needless to say. Amazon deletes 1984 from Kindles

Yeppers. Don't suprise me too much either. Heck...we resemble Orwell's future so much now...may as well try to take it away and see what happens...
I guess the old fashioned way of reading ain't "out" yet!
Jeez...what a freakin world! Complacent, bobble head dunces...how nice to control! lol!

It is an electronic book that is as slim as a pencile, weighs basically nothing and can hold up to 1,500 titles. That's alot of book shelf space for some people. You purchase the electronic copies from amazon for about 1/3 of what the hard print books cost and just download them wirelessly. I have even considered buying one since they came out.

Well personally I'd rather just read a book, but I guess that's just me. Eep... censorship, big brother is watching...

Creepy....I never read this book until my 18 year old son was a freshman. Our goverment & world has gone to hell, very eerie. My Dad used to say that comics when he was a kid became the future.
*drinking* I hope my point came across right.

Yet another way to censor. I did a whole thread not too long ago on this topic http://funhsps.niceboard.org/black-hole-of-controversy-f5/erosion-of-free-rights-in-the-developed-world-t1186.htm But Amazon doing this? How sad and how pervasive it has become in these times.

If Amazon no longer wants to carry the book fine. Take it off the inventory and don't sell it to any new customers. That is their right as a retailer. But you can't just confiscate a paid purchase from your old customers and then act like it's ok because you gave their money back.

I wouldn't think this is a problem, given this is a classic, but I wonder, because of what happened if they ran into a copyright problem?

There is still the old cliche' that there are advantages and disadvantages to every choice you make.

The fact that the ebooks are delivered over Sprint's cell-network was, in this particular case, a disadvantage! People enjoy the convenience, but forget it also provides a method to control. This would not have been possible with an "off-line" e-book reader.

This really makes me wonder about the future of "cloud" computing (i.e., using something such as Google Docs to perform, and more importantly, store your work in the "cloud" provided by the 'Net). After the clown s at Amazon pulled this stunt, why should I trust any company or corporation attempting to "sell" me on the benefits of "cloud" computing?

For another view on this topic:

http://www.betanews.com/article/Media-goes-crazy-over-Amazon-deleting-1984-from-Kindle-but-99cent-ebook-was-illegal-copy/1247874134

Still, even if the above is true, Amazon did not provide an adequate explanation to their purchasers of this particular e-book.

One other, related link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act

Allowing you to trace the responsibility for this problem, at least partial responsibility, back to whichever session of the U.S. Congress passed this legislation.
