Re: citizenship test
Phew! I passed, too, with a 24. But it was kind of embarrassing, because I made some really stupid mistakes.

Re: citizenship test
i'll go for that-echoes my sentiments pretty accurately. now, how are you going to design your test to separate the decent and honest from the indecent and dishonest? this may take you a few years to get the bugs worked out, so take your time showing me the questions....

Re: citizenship test
Lie detectors are notoriously unreliable. So what then? Besides, I think people who are applying for citizenship must go through a rigorous background check. I think most of them are honest hardworking folk.
What other criterea would you use?
I have some ideas, but I'd like to see some of yours.

Re: citizenship test
It is sort of trivia rather than testing for whether they really understand, I agree.
And, I believe, from what I've read, it is actually very much like what new citizens are tested on.
More questions should be about the consitution, amendments and basic rights and government structure; and the philosophy behind them than who was vice president when.
People should also as a family be self supporting and not have to rely on government aid when they become citizens; adding to the whole of the country and not being a drain on it. Again, I think most of the people granted citizenship meet this criterea individually, but they may bring many more family members over who cannot support themselves or be supported by the sponsering member, or have one of them be less than honest. So if families are determined to stay together, they should be judged as a unit when deciding to grant citizenship.
One thing that happens now that should stop forever is granting citizenship to criminals that helped US interests in their countries of origin, in effect, giving them a clean slate. I'm talking about crime lords and the like; or people who helped commit war crimes and then turned tail.
Your turn to think about it and add to this.

Re: citizenship test
I don't think it is unreasonable to expect people who want citizenship to be required to have what I would consider basic rudimentary knowledge about how parts of our government work, historical figures and events. These are all things that we as citizens learned in high school in history and civics classes.
Here is a link to the US Immigration web site that has sample questions on it. http://www.usimmigrationsupport.org/citizenship_test.html
They are very similiar to the ones on the quiz that Reb posted.

Re: citizenship test
Merlin,
let's take an example from a fictional country....logophilia. in logophilia, they have a king and queen; they also have a parliament. in their history, prior to 1900, the king's word was law; in criminal cases of capital punishment, the king decided 'off with his head' or 'drawn and quartered' or??? in 1900, the king passed some of his power to parliament. parliament now shares budgetary and some criminal decisions.
our fictional immigrant from this country has no idea what a republic is. in fact, in logophilia, the king used to decide which books went in the library, so our immigrant has NO IDEA what the history of the u.s. is, nor does he/she know anything about the principles underlying the Constitution. how, pray tell, is this immigrant supposed to know 'who to vote for'? watch the telly, which they have one station in logophilia, and it spouts what the king and parliament want told....dizzying, to a newbie, woont you say?
hence, the idea is...make them learn something about our system of government......is it perfect? no. is it better than nothing...well, maybe. would i prefer that we lock the gd borders and not let anyone in fo rthe next 100 years...dam straight. what do we need any more people on our soil for? and i'm not going to 'illegal immigrants', cause we both know what we think on that....
so, how you gonna test who's honest and decent....'mr. jones, if you found a bag containing a million $, and a driver's license, what would you do?' jeez....that aint gonna work...what's your basic principle of 'who's decent'? how do you first define 'decency'?

Re: citizenship test
The immigrant problem will soon be solved. People come to the US looking for a better life, but that "better life" is rapidly leaving US soil. Once we're as bad off as they are, why bother moving?
In the meantime, why not do something totally outrageous. Make all potential immigrants sign a form stating they'll welcome the death penalty for ANY legal infraction they're found guilty of. Since we've got a ton of laws, and nearly every US citizen (legal or illegal) is guilty of breaking at least a few per week, that should discourage most potential immigrants. Maybe we could extend this to politicians as well. Want a free ride in politics, where you get to strut around & live large on tax money and corporate handouts? Here - sign this form.
And make them sign it in blood. It's spookier that way.

Adain, show us! jeez, don't taunt me! i wanna see
Mel, why hide this discussion-it's not whacko....either people can stand us or they can't. i don't see anything 'private' here; if you're nervous, you can move it, but i'm not nervous about the discussion at all.....
Justin, the only problem with your suggestion is that 'common folk' will be the only one to get the death penalty. the rich and powerful will continue to break laws with impunity. if it would apply fairly, i would be fully in support. what better way to correct the missteps in human dna than to erase them......lol!
Merlin, yeah, our government could do a lot better; getting them to do so appears impossible....

Justin: That's funny!
Adain: I want to see it too. You've got my curiousity about it!
Merlin, I agree with Reb on this; it would be nice if the government did better, but I don't think they're capable of it either. And a death penalty law would not be applied equally; there would of course be loopholes for the wealthy and powerful.
INFP if you got the important questions right but missed the trivia, that's all that matters.
Reb, moving this to "Off the Deep..." is still in an open forum.

Re: citizenship test
mel, i'm easy. says so in the community center bathroom...womens', thank god.....move it where ya want it.
INFP, in the figurative sense, you do NOT suck. in the literal sense, i'm not going there....lol! so, if you don't know your revolutionary war history, a relatively non- painful way to get it is a cold drink, a shaded hammock and a jeff shaara novel on the revolutionary period. or 'the sons of providence'-it's more painful than shaara, but it's based on actual documents from a family's history.

Re: citizenship test
And I thought our citizen test was trivialized! What does who was a famous cricket player have to do with being a responsible citizenship??? Since I don't follow cricket I had no idea on the answer to that one or the name of the flower on your flag. So I got 3 out of 5.

Re: citizenship test
i got 4 out of 5, but they dint tell me which 'un i missed...was it 'rod laver' the jiminy cricket guy, or 'bill', which i chose' hasn't passed out of parliament'??? jeez, tell me when i'm wrong, i might be able to get in...lol!
i guessed at 'golden wattle'-i had no idea, except there's a wattle on hspots...lol!
the oz test may be triviliazed as it looks, but their requirements for immigration were not in the mid 70s wehn i looked into them...they wanted to know almost as much as uncle did for employment, and, in addy, they wanted to know what i planned to do for gainful employment...that's a heartbreaker...i wonder who's asking those people swimming the rio grande?

Re: citizenship test
That cricket question got me, too. I didn't have a clue. But maybe the U.S. could learn from the Aussies. Potential U.S. citizens ought to be able to identify which president starred in "Bedtime for Bonzo?" Or which professional wrestler went on to gain the highest approval rating of any governor of Minnesota?
But I figured out golden wattle, too, thanks to Wattle at HSPots.
